MEDIA SAMPLES

Here are some samples of my work:  conducting, multimedia installations, concert designs, ect.   Enjoy!

Multimedia: Vanhal Concerto

The St Paul JCC Sympony was performing Vanhal's "Concerto for Two Bassoons."  The conductor approached me about adding a visual component to give the performance some added interest.   I produced a Powerpoint sequence timed to the music that has three threads running throughout: information on the composer and his world, information about the concerto and the bassoon, and a listener's map that uses motion graphics to illustrate the structure of the music.   (First performance:  December, 2011.  Powerpoint)

White Christmas Orchestra Excerpts

So I just finished conducting a production of the musical "White Christmas."  Normally I don't post things from the community theater work that I do, but this show seems different.  Just listen to the excerpt reel.  These are amateur  unpaid (mostly) musicians playing a fairly robust Irving Berlin score.  I make no apologies for the recording - Neil Kryder, our 2nd trumpet made the recording from the pit on his laptop with one small microphone.   Even through the rough audio, you can get a sense of the musicality going on.  I have done lots of pits over the years and I always work hard to assemble the strongest players I can find, but this production with Chaska Valley Family Theater seems to mark a new level of musicianship and professionalism in the pit.  Ya know, the union houses simply can't afford pits with 25 musicians anymore these days.  I've been saying for a while that community theater has an opportunity to fill that gap.  "White Christmas"  with CVFT proved this idea correct.  This may not be a "conducting tape" in the traditional sense (since there's no video at all!), but I'm quite proud of this project and gladly offer it as proof of my ability to assemble and prepare solid ensembles.  Enjoy!  (December, 2011.  Editing done with VideoStudio Pro 4 on my laptop)

Multimedia: Seasons

Here is a snipet of a long-term project I've been working on.  There's lots of videos out there that show stunning nature images to accompany Vivaldi's "Four Seasons."  It struck me a while ago that done a bit differently, these videos could add a whole new level of meaning to the music.  So I grabbed a camera and started shooting this Fall.  Then I went into the studio and took a crack at film editing.  This video is the result but it is NOT the final product.  I don't want to give away too much, but my idea includes a narrative with actors and some effects.  Some of these nature shots will be used, however I'm not interested in doing just another nature montage - I'm after something much more artistic.  This video shows the results of my first attempt and filming and film editing.  I am eager to learn more.  Thanks to Jeff Renner at Savage Community Television for the assistance.  (November, 2011.  Shot 1080p  60fps;  Camera: Panasonic AG HPX170;  editing done with Adobe Premiere)

Mahler 1 Rehearsal

In March of 2010 I organized a joint concert between the Minnetonka Civic Orchestra and the St Paul JCC Symphony.  Niether of these small community orchestras had ever undertaken a project of such scope - and neither had ever tackled a massive Mahler symphony either!!!   We had one joint rehearsal just before the concert.  The film is an excerpt from that rehearsal.  I am happy to report that both groups rose to the challenge of playing with another orchestra and performed the tricky third movement of Mahler 1 very commendably.  Sorry for the poor video and audio quality.....  (March, 2010)

Multimedia: High Flight

In February, 2010 I did a concert with the Minnetonka Civic Orchestra titled "Soar!"   The entire program utilized multimedia and was presented in a cabaret style.  I created Powerpoint displays for each of the works performed, including a slideshow of images from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics set to Bugler's Dream/The Olympic Theme (the concert was the same week as the Olympic closing ceremonies).  The video sample here is an excerpt from another work on that program.  It uses a famous poem called "High Flight" and a collection of images, all timed to a performance of music from the movie Apollo 13 by James Horner. (First performance February, 2010.  Powerpoint.)

I'm sharing this video because this concert was the first time I was back on the podium after a fifteen year break from conducting.  During those fifteen years I was still directing - - - Executive directing a non-profit music conservatory I founded and built into a mid-sized arts center.  I will always remember that night with the Minnetonka Civic Orchestra;  it felt really good to be making music again!  (October, 2009)
